ECBS 2017 is a formal meeting dedicated to formulating and advancing methods, techniques, and tools for engineering of computer-based systems. The conference is devoted to the design, development, deployment, and analysis of the complex systems whose behavior is largely determined or controlled by computers. Such systems are characterized by functional, performance, and reliability requirements that mandate the tight integration of information processing and physical processes.

ECBS integrates software, hardware, and communication perspective of system engineering through its many facets that include system modeling, requirements specification, simulation, architectures, safety, security, reliability, human–computer interaction, system integration, verification and validation, high performance/parallel computing, cloud-based technologies, and project management. The conference provides a bridge between industry and academia, blending academic research and industrial development.

The 5th edition of the conference will be held in Larnaca, Cyprus. Larnaca is known for its palm-tree seafront, the Church of Saint Lazarus, the Hala Sultan Tekke, the Kamares Aqueduct and its medieval fort. It is built on the ruins of ancient Citium, which was the birthplace of Stoic philosopher Zeno. Larnaca is home to the country’s primary airport, Larnaca International Airport. It also has a seaport and a marina. Larnaca is a highly touristic city and close to some of the best beaches of Cyprus in Ayia Napa and Protaras.

The conference venue is the well known 4* hotel, Lordos Beach Hotel. The Lordos Beach Hotel is one of the leading 4 star hotels in Cyprus. Standing directly on the sandy beach of the Larnaca Bay it is ideally located yet close to both the Larnaca International Airport and the city centre. Set in its own gardens the Lordos Beach boasts a comfortable and stylish environment with professional service from caring staff. Extensively refurbished during 2002 and 2006, the guest rooms on all floors are equipped with all the facilities a discerning traveller expects and are luxuriously decorated in a natural pastel tones.

The program of ECBS 2017 includes a keynote by Avgoustinos Constantinides, the Solutions Director of IBSCY Ltd. on the business value of the Cloud, and research papers. The conference attracted 42 paper submissions from 25 countries from many continents. After rigorous reviewing by at least three members of the Program Committee per paper, 16 full papers, 3 short papers and 3 posters were selected to form the technical program and be included in the conference proceedings to be published by ACM ICPS. Papers cover topics of interest in ECBS in areas of software engineering, parallel and distributed systems, embedded systems and networking.

[Book] Technology and Inequality: Concentrated Wealth in a Digital World

Author: Jonathan P. Allen

This book summarizes what we know about technology and inequality across disciplines, and seeks out new ways to analyze this relationship based on technology and business practices, with the objective of restoring digital technology as an engine of opportunity. Besides the unique focus on the role of technology in inequality, the book has a unifying theme of tracing wealth creation and wealth capture in the technology sector, and relating specific practices—what technology companies actually do—to larger shifts in wealth and power. A clear conceptual framework is used to analyze key industry case studies: search engines, social media, and the ‘sharing’ economy.

More Information on the publisher’s website or dedicated book website.

Key points from the book:

  • The main question: Why would digital technology increase inequality? Will more coding skills, or better regulations, reverse this trend?
  • To understand technology and inequality, focus on wealth. Wealth has shifted since the 1980s from real to financial assets, and away from the energy and commodities sectors towards technology and finance. These shifts have tended to increase wealth concentration.
  • Digital technology changes not just products and services, but how markets and the economy operate. Digital markets are different from classical ‘perfect’ or ‘free’ markets.
  • Digital technology offers unique opportunities to profit through taxation and regulatory avoidance. It’s no coincidence that tech companies have some of the largest overseas cash holdings.
  • When we look at new digital industries, like search, social media, and the more recent sharing economy, we see highly profitable, highly concentrated industries making complex technological choices about who receives what information—how reality and relationships are mediated by digital technology.
  • What’s the solution? More education and better regulation can help, but to make a real dent in wealth concentration, the business model for the basic ‘use cases’ of our digital world needs to change. For the three key information relationships we identify (connecting buyers to sellers, people to people, and people to external reality), non-transparent businesses that profit from maximizing ‘engagement’ and ‘conversion’ seem to concentrate wealth.
  • The tech industry may be a little bit too successful at value creation, and especially value capture. While wealth concentration is not an inevitable outcome of digital technology, there are few economic, political, or cultural forces acting as a balance against it.

Collective Intelligence and Crowds

Minitrack
January 3-6, 2018
Big Island, Hawaii, USA

We are looking for papers that analyze collective intelligence, knowledge
creation, and crowdsourcing. We also encourage the submission of papers
that design and implement technologies that create new kinds of
collectives. For example, papers that consider how machine learning and
human learning interact in crowds and communities. In sum, we are open to a
wide range of research that addresses relations between people,
collectives, and machines, as well as the artifacts produced as a result.

The deadline is June 15, 2017. Feel free to communicate with any of the
three minitrack chairs, Jeff Nickerson (jnickerson@stevens.edu), Pnina
Fichman (fichman@indiana.edu), or Don Steiny (steiny@steiny.com).
